Sun's Visit to HKU
(1923.2.20)
In spring of 1923, Sun Yat-sen arrived in Hong Kong from Shanghai on his way to Canton. He made a visit to The University of Hong Kong on February 20, at the invitation of the Students' Union, and delivered his historic speech at the Great Hall (now Loke Yew Hall) to more than four hundred guests.
Sun Yat-sen began his speech by saying that, "I feel as though I have returned home, because Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong are my intellectual birthplace."
After the speech, Sun Yat-sen was carried in a wicker chair by five to six students to the open space outside the Main Entrance of the Hall for a group photograph. The place remained crowded with people until Sun Yat-sen left at 1pm in the afternoon.
