SERVICE is a core value of The University of Hong Kong.
The University has a long trandition of contributing to society. Throughout the years, HKU students, staff, alumni and friends have committed themselves to building a better world by engaging in community service projects worldwide.
Under SERVICE 100, in this summer of 2011, over 300 HKU students will continue to take up initiatives in organising and engaging in service projects worldwide for the improvement of the human condition, to eradicate poverty, combat HIV/AIDS, promote gender equality, ensure environmental sustainability, and advocate social harmony and world peace. They will be setting off to over 20 destinations, including Ghana in Africa, Chile in Latin America, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Mainland China.
Professor Lap-Chee Tsui and students made their pledges at the Send-off Ceremony on May 23, 2011 at Sun Yat-sen Place, and he said, "No matter local or abroad, your actions will result in a prolonged and sustainable impact on the people and community".
