To jointly celebrate the centenaries of HKU and Tsinghua University, a group of 15 HKU students with another 15 students from Tsinghua University engaged in the Bridge to China project, Wu Zhi Qiao (無止橋), from August 8 – 15, 2011 to build a bridge in a remote village, Xianyuan Village near Lijiang in Yunnan province(雲南省麗江市仙源村).

The service project aims to promote family core values among low income families with members of primary students in western district. It mainly consists of several parts:

1. Experiential Learning Workshop – Children were encouraged to care about and communicate with their parents through a life game and also to understand the importance of balance in life.
2. Family Outing – Around 30 families were given a platform to relax and spend an enjoyable weekend with fun and interactive activities

In April, I was lucky to have the chance to join the HKU Wu Zhi Qiao (WZQ) team on an investigation trip in Xinping Village, Lijiang, Yunnan Province. Our ultimate goal was not only to build a bridge to help people cross the river, but also to improve their living conditions. The bridge we built was more than a physical bridge; it served as a bridge to connect university students with needy people living in remote areas...

The SERVICE 100 Week aims to promote and encourage efforts on the eradication of global poverty among HKU members. During the Week, a range of activities that call for the action, reflection and sharing of good practices in fighting against poverty worldwide by HKU students, staff and alumni will be organised.

A group of 25 students from the Rotaract Club, HKUSU (Session 2012-2013) participated in the project “Magnificent Mongolia 2012” in Mongolia this summer.

From May 31 to June 10, the team was involved in a wide range of social services, including tree planting, an orphanage visit, a visit to children with Down Syndrome, voluntary teaching in local schools and vegetable gardening.

SERVICE 100: SERVE Around the World

HKU students teach, serve and learn in communities across the globe, they reaffirm HKU's commitment to building a better world.

From June to July 2012, a group of 11 HKU students arranged their own trip to Ghana and participated in the project “Ghana 2012: Do small things with GREAT Love” to conduct voluntary teaching for children in a local orphanage. They taught the children practical skills, such as English, computer use and basic personal hygiene techniques.

"I thought social responsibility was a very meaningful concept when I first heard about it at HKU six years ago." That is the reason John Lee 李宇俊 (BSc 2006) decided to tap into his passion for helping youngsters and went on to extend his efforts into the community by becoming a mentor (a Blue) of ‘Growing Partners’ Project with the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs Association in 2007.

The SERVICE 100 Fair aims to promote the service spirit of HKU, which is one of the three themes of HKU centenary celebration, and provide a platform for students, staff and alumni to demonstrate how they have been serving across the world. A number of NGOS will also be invited to introduce their service opportunities. Through the fair, HKU members will be reassured of their roles and continuous efforts in serving and leading to serve both local and global communities.

"足動‧觸動 — 赤足行 Shoes-Off Walkathon" is an annual fundraising event of CEA. The Walkathon will be held on October 27 to raise fund for underprivileged school children in Guiding County, Guizhou Province (貴州省貴定縣).

It is a DIY shopping bag workshop which was held in Queen Elizabeth Hospital organized by Art in Hospital.

Poverty, Justice and Social Responsibility

With the support of the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation and HKU Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), a group of 14 students participated in the project "Poverty and Exclusion Alleviation"(Project PAEAN)in Xiushui, Jiangxi Province, China this summer.

Living at high altitude near the Thai border with Burma, the Akha are a hill tribe of subsistence farmers known for their artistry. The Akha generally live in bamboo huts with thatched roofs raised on low wooden stilts in hilly area. The Akha women are famous for their "long neck" as a result of the practice of placing bronze rings around their necks since the age of 5. A group of 18 HKU students spent a meaningful summer in the northern part of Thailand to help rebuild a demolished orphanage home.

The “Better Health, Better Lives, Better Future” Project (BBB) was launched in January this year. Project BBB aims to improve water quality and hygiene awareness in the orphanages of Siem Reap, Cambodia. From June 24 to July 2, 2012, the BBB team (they called themselves “BBBers”) visited two orphanages in Siem Reap and accomplished various tasks.

"Money isn't everything." You would not believe anyone saying that in the prospering world of Hong Kong. Through 9 weeks of the MOEI Cambodia program, I taught the underprivileged children ABCs, but they taught me the lesson of a lifetime that you can find happiness out of the simplest things. Teaching is all about mutual trust, compromising and taking the leap of faith, which is so important yet always forgotten in the world we are living in.

The neonatal mortality rate across Western Africa countries is unacceptability high. Thousands of newborns in Western Africa do not survive to see their 28th day of life. Although child (0-5 years) mortality has been decreasing, neonatal (0-28 days) mortality remains stagnant in many developing countries.

This year, Operation Santa Claus, an annual fundraising campaign organised by SCMP & RTHK, partnered with the 8 local universities to develop the very first University Ambassadors Programme to mobilise university students to raise fund for OSC 2010!

The event was organised by the Asian Medical Students’ Association Hong Kong (AMSAHK), the only medical student organisation consisting of medical students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong. It was a one-day carnival with the objectives to promote active living among children with developmental disabilities, active participation and integration of these children in Hong Kong community, and raise public awareness in mental health management.

ECSEL, which stands for “Empowering Chinese Social Enterprise Leaders,” is a program to support Chinese entrepreneurs who want to use innovative, for-profit business approaches to solve social and environmental problems. From June 9-28, 2012, a group of 5 HKU Engineering students set off to the Ayeat Village in Northern Chiang Rai, Thailand for the project “Mini-Hydropower Technologies Designed for Rural Villages in the Developing World”.

2011年的暑假，三個香港大學學生參加由「智行基金會」所舉辦的「2011香港傑出學生選舉 - 赴外交流計劃」。他們遠赴安徽省，探訪愛滋病孤兒。

Our voluntary teaching trip lasted for 4 days in the Zhetu secondary school in Yunnan. During the trip, we learnt to overcome difficulties and experienced different learning and living styles.

On April 9, 2012, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organised a joyful event, “Easter Bunny’s Journey of Hope”, at the Chief Secretary’s residence, Victoria House for 60 children and youth from Tin Shui Wai and North District. It aimed to foster hope among the participants, broaden their horizons and to give an opportunity for young people to develop their potential.

May 12, 2008 will go down in the annals of Chinese history as a day of great tragedy and sorrow...
